The Structural Shift Redefining CCL & PCB Materials

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

My Professional Background is as follows: a graduate in Mechanical Engineering, aged 56, with Experience in Production and Process Engineering. In 2005, I started my own manufacturing facility for copper-clad laminate in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, under the name Signour Laminates India Pvt Ltd. I am the Founder member of this company. The Company Obtained UL Certification for Quality from Underwriters Laboratories USA. All the machines were designed and fabricated in Ahmedabad, and the Factory was manually operated. We catered to Customers in India and the USA.  Later, I withdrew from the Board and my stake in the company. I have experience in the preparation of Resin for FR4, XPC, FR1, and AlCCL, Grade of Copper Clad Laminate.

Q2. What is the one change reshaping the copper-clad laminate and PCB materials industry today, and why is it accelerating now rather than a few years ago?

Quality and Price variation from China.

Q3. Where is technology adoption improving performance meaningfully, and where does it fail to translate into pricing power or ROI?

Using Chinese Automatic CCL Machines improves performance, as CCL is widely manufactured in China, and its R&D infrastructure is far superior.
Failure to translate into Pricing power is due to the lack of the “art of combination of Chemicals and Core Materials,” which reduces production costs. India has 3 Segments of PCB manufacturers: 1- High Tg users, 2- Normal Tg users, and 3- Low-grade CCL (Low Price). Most PCB manufacturers are price-conscious when it comes to copper-clad laminate, and it does not matter which core material they use. China is very tricky when choosing core materials. So if you have the art of choosing the proper substitute material at a lower cost, then ROI is definitely achieved. The Chinese also use recycled heat to reduce costs.

Q4. Where is the PCB materials value chain most fragile today and what early signals indicate stress before disruptions become visible?

The PCB Materials value chain is most fragile in the selection of the Proper Copper Clad Laminate to meet the End user's price and Quality requirements. The early signals indicating stress are the peel strength test and Warpage at Hot Air Leveling (HAL). If either fails, then caution.

Q5. Where do environmental or compliance requirements meaningfully constrain growth or increase cost in laminate manufacturing?

Environmental Compliance does not affect the cost of Laminate as it has zero hazardous discharge. Of course, the Copper Clad Laminate Factory should not be near the sea or in a moist climate, as Copper may oxidize due to weathering.

Q6. How is competitive intensity shifting globally—are markets consolidating, or are new regional players emerging?

The Competitive intensity is shifting globally due to pricing and the introduction of multi-layer PCBs and HD PCBs in recent years. The PCB Sector is upgrading Machines and adopting automation technology to meet market demand as the complexity of PCB designs increases day by day. Regional Players are emerging, especially in India.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

Two Questions I would ask:
1.    Does the Manufacturing Company have Fully Automatic machines?
2.    How about the Raw Material selection for making the final Product?  If the above two questions are answered in the affirmative, I prefer to proceed with full Consent to Invest. The reason is confidence in Quality and Pricing Control over the Final Product.
