Flexing for Growth: Packaging’s Global Shift
Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?
I’ve been working in the flexible packaging industry for over 12 years, with extensive experience in global sales and marketing. Over this period, I’ve had the opportunity to work across diverse regions, including the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
My expertise lies in understanding global market dynamics and emerging trends, and in developing business opportunities in line with them. I’ve also collaborated closely with leading global FMCG brands, which has given me a strong perspective on customer requirements and the industry's evolving expectations.
Q2. How are global demand trends for flexible packaging evolving across different regions (Africa, Europe, North America, Middle East)? Are certain regions growing faster, and why?
Global demand for flexible packaging continues to evolve, though the pace and drivers differ across regions. Europe is at the forefront of sustainability-led transformation, where stringent regulations and consumer preferences are accelerating the shift towards recyclable mono-materials and bio-based solutions, particularly in food, personal care, and pharmaceuticals. North America, while a relatively mature market, is seeing steady demand growth fueled by convenience-driven formats such as pouches and resealable packaging, alongside an increasing emphasis on e-commerce and digital printing solutions.
In contrast, the Middle East and Africa are experiencing some of the fastest global growth, underpinned by rapid urbanisation, rising consumption, and expanding food processing and pharmaceutical sectors, further supported by government initiatives on local manufacturing and packaging sustainability. Collectively, these regional dynamics highlight that while sustainability remains a common theme, local market maturity, regulations, and consumer behaviour largely shape the trajectory of flexible packaging demand worldwide.
Q3. What are the most important purchasing criteria customers in FMCG, personal care, and beverage industries focus on when selecting flexible packaging solutions?
Based on my personal experience serving global FMCG, personal care, and beverage brands, customers primarily focus on product protection, barrier performance, and shelf appeal while selecting flexible packaging solutions. Sustainability and recyclability have become key decision drivers, along with cost efficiency and supply reliability. Additionally, customers value innovative formats, high-quality printing, and compliance with global safety standards, ensuring both performance and brand differentiation.
Q4. How are advancements in digital tools and analytics transforming forecasting, pricing strategies, and market mix decisions in flexible packaging?
Digital transformation is redefining how we plan and perform. With advanced analytics and real-time data, we’re now able to predict market trends more accurately, optimize material sourcing and pricing, and respond swiftly to customer demand. These tools empower us to make smarter, faster decisions, ensuring our packaging solutions stay competitive, efficient, and perfectly aligned with market needs.
Q5. What are the most promising innovations in sustainable flexible packaging that you see gaining traction in the near future?
Mono-material recyclable laminates, compostable films, and paper-based flexible packaging are key sustainable innovations. Advancements in barrier coatings and bio-based polymers are also transforming the landscape, offering eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance.
Q6. How large is the addressable market for flexible packaging solutions across major end-use segments such as FMCG, personal care, health, pet food, and beverages?
The market is growing at a steady pace of around 4-5 % annually. The above sectors are the key drivers and are rapidly expanding.
With the introduction of sustainable packaging solutions, there may be a fuelled growth in the above-mentioned sectors.
Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?
Firstly, need to ask the company if they are balancing sustainability goals with commercial viability and operational scalability?”
- The focus should be on innovation and adaptability
- The company co-creates value with brands, driving sustainable change.
- Understanding the R&D investments and timelines for bringing next-gen packaging to market would be key.
- Long-term vision: how the company plans to lead the transition from traditional to sustainable flexible packaging profitably.
