A new report from UN Climate Change shows the national climate plans (called NDCs) presented so far to the UN, do not put us on the path of meeting the objectives of the #ParisAgreement.                                                                                                                                                 

Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC, just released the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6 Climate Change 2021), that addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system and climate change, bringing together the latest advances in climate science, and combining multiple lines of evidence from paleoclimate, observations, process understanding, and global and regional climate simulations.   

This, as sort of the state of the world on climate, on global warming, on sea level rise, on changes, and extreme storms, and droughts, and precipitation levels. Nevertheless, no one should be surprised that this is not a particularly bright news for climate change, which is wide spreading, rapid, and intensifying, and some trends are now irreversible, at least during the present time frame, according to the latest much-anticipated Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, released, showing that 2020 was also another unprecedented year of extreme weather and climate disasters. 

Why is 2021 such a crucial year for the fight against #ClimateEmergency? 

Our challenge is clear, even so, one of the answers is the 5-year cycle of the Paris Agreement. Following their adoption in 2015, countries agreed that Parties should submit new and increasingly ambitious climate plans every 5 years. After significant delays caused by the #COVID19 pandemic in 2020, countries have been asked to present their new climate plans this year, ahead of the all-important # COP26 UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. 

But no one should be surprised that this is not a particularly encouraging news. I mean, of course, so many headlines around major wildfires in the US, Turkey, Greece, and others around the world and major flooding challenges. 

The new report proves it. We are not there yet. We need more countries, especially most of the significant carbon emitters, the fossil fuel producers, and exporters, all participated to present their plans and for them to be very ambitious. 

On the other hand, technologies such as Hydrogen becomes a game changer, could fuel our future, helping us to solve the climate crisis among others clean energy sources. Though energy reliability and resilience, have a key role to play in decarbonizing the global economy.  

The escalating emphasis to reduce carbon footprint, accelerated adoption of renewable energy, and isolated efforts, alone, can’t get us over the journey's end. Hence, public policy and private investment are both essential, as well as differentiated responses of countries around the world to continue decreasing their carbon consumption. 

However, a lot has changed since 2015. Thus, 2021 confront us to “No Time to Lose” New scientific analysis from the IPCC has shown that we must act even faster to keep the goals of the Paris Agreement within reach. That is why 2021 is so crucial, countries will present their climate plans and new commitments for the coming years. 

Lastly, countries once again can take actions to the warnings in the IPCC report and act on the many calls for #ClimateAction from business, city, and civil society leaders around the world. Therefore, 2021 becomes a “make or break year” for Climate Action. 

We still have time to act, but we must do it now. Hoping this is helpful for everyone.
